Specialist IT solutions provider, Layer8 has become an official reseller of Proxmox, an open-source virtualisation platform that helps businesses manage and consolidate their IT infrastructure more efficiently.
Layer8 started out as the internal IT department for Hull-based engineering firm Spencer Group and has supported the company’s technology needs for over 30 years. For over a decade, it has utilised various Proxmox configurations, benefitting from its performance improvements, feature enhancements and growing eco-system.
Layer8 first began using Proxmox in 2011, and its IT infrastructure is now largely powered by its server solutions, with a three-node production cluster supporting over 30 virtual machines and a separate two-node testing and development cluster used to safely trial updates and new configurations before they are deployed.
Sam Tyler, Systems Lead at Layer8 has been leading on Proxmox projects since 2023 and in this time has initiated a full rebuild of Spencer Group’s virtual environment, which involved installing new server drives, updating network configuration and improving overall infrastructure stability.
After branching off as its own standalone company in 2025, the Layer8 team were keen to become an official partner of Proxmox to further strengthen the services it could offer to its customers.
In September 2025, Layer8 officially became an Authorised Reseller partner, gaining the capacity to resell all of Proxmox’s solutions and provide related services to its customers as a more cost-effective and reliable solution to their IT infrastructure needs.
Layer8 now offer a range of Proxmox-related services, including VM Backup & Monitoring, Host Monitoring, Package Management and VM Performance Troubleshooting, all of which are designed to enhance system reliability and improve operational performance.
